Reading Music

by sj

Sunday!  I hope to get lots of reading done today.  I’m a little over halfway through the book I intend to have finished in time for Trashy Tuesday (don’t worry, there’s a back up book already read JUST IN CASE), and like to attempt to escape the noise in my busy household by sticking earbuds in.

Here are a few of the things Meg and I like to listen to while we’re reading.  We’re not huge fans of lyrics because we find them distracting.  I know Heather has a hard time loading pages with lots of videos, so we’ll just post links…plus, some of the songs are only available on grooveshark, so they don’t have videos anyway!

Japancakes – The Waiting

Explosions in the Sky – Your Hand in Mine

Bar Kokhba Sextet – Gediel

Liszt – La Campanella

Bach – Cello Suite No. 1 Prelude

LotR Soundtrack – The Fellowship

What, just because I hate the movies means I can’t appreciate the music?  [angry face]  Okay, you got me – some of these are Meg’s choices.  Stop looking at me like that!  Look, I said stop.  I’m serious.  [even angrier face]

Anyway, hope you all get lots of reading done today, and enjoy our reading music selections!

  1. Happy AF Day! Enjoyed the second one.

  2. I was wondering if the LotR was an April Fool’s joke. I, for one, enjoy the soundtracks. They were well done.

  3. No reading today. Just test making and printing.

    • Bummer. I haven’t done much reading because I’m too infuriated over a length of stay as yet to be determined houseguest that will be arriving this evening.

  4. I have a pool of classical music that I like to listen to when I have to concentrate on something. I mostly don’t know the songwriters because I copied them all from my local library (music piaracy was around long before computers came along). I agree, words are a bother, so there is no opera but generally I like string arrangements that ebb and flow.

There is another theme in here that I find intriguing, namely your voracity for books. Personally I am a very slow reader and I would aspire not to be. Methinks that brains are wired differently in this regard (speed-reading not withstanding). My wife has painstakingly attempted to bring up our son to love and appreciate reading and that has gone by the wayside with his obsession for online gaming. We’re hoping that he will re-discover his passion after this ‘phase’ but I won’t hold my breath.

    • My oldest is 12 and he’s a decent reader. I like that we can enjoy many of the same things, and most of what he’s read in the last year were books I handed to him, saying “Here, I think you’ll like this.”

I can’t remember a time that I didn’t read quickly, really. Trips to the library in the summer were frequent, because I’d take home six books (the maximum for someone under 13) and have to go back in two days.

One of my best friends is very ANTI music without lyrics, because she says the lyrics are the best parts of the song. I tell her that she’s obviously listening to the wrong music if the music itself is so bad it’s unimportant.

  5. I can’t read and listen to music at the same time. I used to be able to, but not anymore. Is this relevant or even interesting? No.

  6. Bach? He’ll never catch on.
