Middle-Earth Summer Reading Schedule (aka Puttin’ the Blog in Balrog)

by sj

Good afternoon friends!

I’ve finally put together a reading schedule for our group read, you can find it (as well as icons and a contact form) here.

Hopefully none of you will find it too aggressive.  If you’re unable to keep up with the reading pace (we all know that real life intervenes with Happy Fun Times), that’s not a problem.  The discussion posts won’t be going anywhere, just join in when you’re comfortable.

I hope a few of you will be interested in posting about your reading experiences (whether you guest post here or post on your own blog), especially those of you that are reading the series for the first time.

  1. Looking forward to putting a dent in a tale about Ents. Sorry. Just getting in the spirit. Actually, I’m not sorry at all.

Here’s some fun. Husband will be joining us. I’ll post tidbits of our house discussions for your entertainment.

  2. SJ already knows, but I’ll be posting on this too. Looking forward to what you and your husband have to say, becomingcliche!

  3. I’m excited for this! It’s been so long since I’ve read LotR, I feel like I’ll be reading it for the first time.

  4. I feel last-day-of-school excited. Yay!

  5. Oh man, wish I had time to participate…

  6. This sounds great! I’ve been meaning to read these books for absolutely ages. Nothing like group motivation and the incentive of a film to spur me on! Thanks sj!
Depending on how I’m going with school and whatnot (as it’s my winter during your summer) I’d love to upload some posts on my blog, but we’ll see. :)

    • Thanks for stopping by, Blake! I’m really happy you’re going to join us.

I’m a little nervous about all of these people that haven’t read Tolkien before joining in. I hope everyone loves it!

      • Oh don’t worry, I’m really excited, and I’ve seen the films (I know that’s not really a good indicator, but anyway) and I want to read them before The Hobbit comes out.
And it was my pleasure to stop by. I love reading your blog :)

  7. I should search out our copies – my husband has read them, but I haven’t. Not sure I can keep up the schedule, but I could give it a try.

    • Yes, you can totally do it! I swear I won’t be a horrible taskmaster (unless you want me to be, I guess?) about it, though.

      • Ha! Love the emoticon. Been reading 50 Shades of Grey, have you? The people at work have been talking about it – it does sound like a Trashy Tues type novel.

And I’ll happily try to keep up. I’ll be through with the book club by then.

        • Heh, I read them a few months ago for TT, but I’ve been waiting for Meg to return from her hiatus to write about them.

          It just seemed appropriate. ;)

          • Absolutely. I have only heard about them so far, but curiousity will probably get the better of me at some point. Illustrations with dodisharkicorn are a must.

            • Fair warning – they read like the poorly edited fanfiction they originally were.

I spent much time rolling my eyes and scoffing. Even the sex scenes weren’t all that sexy.

  8. Just seeing this now and I’m going to try to read along. I read and enjoyed The Hobbit at an age that was probably too young, but never got into the rest of the series. I have them on my Kindle so it’s about time I take the plunge. Thanks for hosting this!

    • This is going to be my first time reading the digital copies I bought when I first got my reader over two years ago. I think it’ll be great for highlighting and note-taking.

The Hobbit is great to read as a youngling, but I am so surprised to learn how many people haven’t read one or the other before. I’m glad you’re going to read with us. :)

  9. Sounds like fun. Plan to participate for the Hobbit and will see for the rest.

  10. Does it count that I already read most of the books at least 13 times?

  11. So I just saw this, and I am so very, very tempted. I have actually never read LotR (yes! I know! craziness!). I tried to read the Hobbit when I was a wee youngling, and found it (please don’t hurt me fandom…) boring. But maybe it’s time to give Tolkien again a try….
