Puttin’ the Blog in Balrog – Drinkalong the Second

by sj

I hope everyone is well-rested/recuperated from last week’s drinkalong.  It was a lot of fun, but rather more intoxicating than I’d anticipated.  Because of that the rules have been amended, which I’m hoping means we can watch a little more movie this time.  I realized AFTER last week that only watching an hour at a time meant that I was subjecting myself to 12 weeks of rantiness.  TWELVE WEEKS, YOU GUYS!  That’s crazy, and I don’t know that my poor little brain (or my liver) can take it.

SO!

Here’s the plan.  We start at the same time (that’s 10:15 pm EDT, if you weren’t participating last week, there’s a chart here that should let you know approximately when we’re starting for you ), and everyone uses this awesome countdown timer I found so we know when to hit play.  We’ll be starting where we left off (most of us), which is Chapter 17 of Disc 1, The Midgewater Marshes.  (Heather and Eric, I just checked, you’ll be starting at The Spoiling of Isengard, if you didn’t find the EEs.  I’ll tell you when this scene is starting so you can hit play.)

Since we only have ~00:38 left to Disc 1, when it’s over, we’ll take a TEN MINUTE BREAK.  I’m serious.  If we’re all going to be synced up, you gotta try to get your bathroom breaks, disc swapping, smoking and drink refilling done in this 10 minutes.

When the 10 minute break is up, we hit play on Disc 2 and watch THROUGH The Bridge at Khazad-Dûm (for those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, we’ll be stopping shortly after Gandalf fights the Balrog).  This chapter ends with Frodo crying and before they start running to Lothlórien.  For those of you keeping track, that’s another ~00:44, which means we’ll be watching a little over 1:20 this week.  I hope that’s not a problem for anyone, especially because it means that NEXT WEEK we can finish up the first movie.  Yay for moving right along!

Okay, here are the updated rules (with a new background picture!):

Once again, click to enlarge.

PostScript 1:  Heather introduced me to tweetchat last week (sadly after I was already too far into the movie to make use of it), so there’s a room we can all use that adds the hashtag on for us AND updates faster than following the tag on twitter does.  I hope you’ll all join me in the #PtBiB room tomorrow night.

PostScript 2:  I know Heather has the theatrical editions (not sure about anyone else?), and looking at the chapters list for the Extended Editions, there are a LOT of extended scenes in the section we’re about to watch.  Some of them are only a minute or two longer, but I know there’s at least one entirely new scene that’s shortly after the Council of Elrond (which is actually where the first disc stops).  Heather, maybe just pause it after that scene and get a new soda or something, and we’ll tell you when Bilbo starts giving out gifts?  If this doesn’t work for you, let me know, and I’ll see what else we can figure out.  I hate the thought of you not being able to swear at the films along with me.  <3

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you– this is a HUGE help. All of this will work out just fine for me. I can’t wait for more mutual ranting!!!

  2. So excited! I’ll probably cut myself off after the first beer because I have to do a little driving later in the day. The commentary is more fun than the drinking, anyway. Nevermind. . . Who am I kidding? We know it’s all about the drinking!

I have a feeling that by the time we reach the second and third movies, the “homoerotic subtext between Frodo and Sam” will become the new scenery pr0n.

    • Yeah, I thought the same thing. Their movie relationship gets stranger and stranger the further into the story we get. We’ll have to revisit the rules as we get further in if it gets to be too much.

  3. And here I thought you were being all heroic and self-sacrificing to subject yourself to twelve weeks of movies you hate… The countdown is just me most perfectist thing in the world. You’ve worked so hard to give us all our fun! Thank you!

  4. I am there like Sinclair! (Lewis?) you might have to help me figure out the Twitter chat though. Sometimes I’m quick on the uptake, and sometimes not.

I’m going to search for some mead after work so that I can really feel Middle Earthian!

  5. Tweetchat is a REVELATION. Amazing.

  6. I refuse to take part in drinking games… even back when I drank way too much… because one of two things will happen. Either you get way too drunk, and end up regretting something, or… even worse… you don’t get as drunk as you were trying to. Never let random outside forces dictate your drinking speed.
That being said, have fun, be safe, and I am there for moral support… unless I get exactly the right amount of drunk and end up dpoing something else.
