Hello, Darkness – Come on in. Let me light a candle.

“Inspired by colour,” they said.

Colour constantly inspires me, and in this instance, it inspired me to create a musical rainbow for myself you guys.

“Oooooh, sj – what’s a musical rainbow?” I’m sure you’re all asking.

Only a ROY G BIV playlist that I spent the last few hours working on.

AND making sure that the majority of you can listen by creating it on both Spotify AND YouTube.  I know, I’m the best.  Save all of your accolades for another time when I’m feeling particularly down.

I had to re-work it a bit because not everything in my iTunes library is available on the internet (I know, the horror, right?), but I’m pretty satisfied with the 20 songs I’ve managed to include.

Since I tried to keep it to the colours in the rainbow, (substituting purple for violet because I didn’t like many of the violet songs) you’ll notice a marked absence of black and white.

Don’t worry, I’m prepared for that!

Start with this one:

Then move on to this (or play it on YouTube here):

And end with this:

Oh, and a bonus track, which doesn’t have a colour in the title, but which makes me giggle everytime I hear “Pantone 292.”

I hope you all enjoy this musical rainbow!  What songs would you have included?

  1. I LOVE THIS IDEA, and this spin on the challenge. I want to rush home and listen to this whole playlist. This is the coolest!

  2. Ooooh, a shiny new meme! I likes this, precious! :-D

  3. I am pretty musically illiterate, so I can only enjoy your rainbow and not make one of my own. But apparently Pandora is playing along for me. It is playing Coldplay’s Yellow for me right now, and I wanted to share. (Not sure if I like the song.)

I just thought of something silly: given my musical illiterness, I guess my musical rainbow is “Colorblind” by Counting Crows.

    • Ok, don’t watch that video…it has clips from the movie….but also dialogue and sound…wtf? Why make a video of the song with stupid dialogue over it? It sounds terrible. Sorry.

    • [ahem] Yellow was actually the most difficult colour for me, and I was almost ready to start using songs with Sunshine in the title, but then I remembered the Beck and didn’t have to resort to Coldplay (ew) or anything else I didn’t like.

Not that I hate people who like Coldplay (Amy), I just don’t care much for them.

      • I don’t really *like* Coldplay, just “Yellow” and “Fix You” and “The Scientist.” The rest of it, meh. But those three songs give me chills.

I’m saving this for another day because today I am listening to this one sad song on repeat because it was on the radio and now I am obsessed and I don’t want to talk about it right now.

Carry on. I love this post.

  4. This idea is full of win and awesome and cupcakes. I’m going to try to do this, but without showing anyone, because my musical library is about an inch deep and a mile wide (like, you know, a big puddle of … stuff). Plus, I bruise like a peach. I’ll brave one question, though – Amber by 311 – yellow or not?

  5. Some nice choices. Bonus points for Mingus. Clutch makes some big noise. They remind me of the Smalls, a Canadian band from the 90s: loud, literate, and nice guys.

    • Heh, I was telling Kate earlier that I realize the Mingus doesn’t really fit with everything else, but I couldn’t NOT use it.

Loud and literate is a pretty apt description of Clutch. I will listen to the song you sent in the morning, when I’m not on the phone.
