It Had to be Done Some Time

by sj

Everyone has (at some point) been asked the “You’re stuck on a deserted island, you only have [insert number here] books/albums/whatever the hell else FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, what do you pick?” question posted to them.

I’ve probably spent more time thinking about this than the average person, because that’s the way my brain works.  I can’t answer the book question, because my FAVOURITE books aren’t necessarily the books I’d choose.  If I were talking about books, I’d have to take into consideration compendiums and whatnot, and that’s just more work than I’m willing to put in at the moment.

So, today, I’m going to talk about the five ALBUMS I’d take with me – were I lucky enough to be stranded with an iPod (that only holds five albums, WTS?) and a way to keep it charged until I died of scurvy or some shit.  These are albums that I can (and have) listen/ed to over and over and will never ever grow tired of.

sj’s Deserted Island Top Five

(in chronological order)

1.  The Beatles – Rubber Soul
rubber soul
Yeah, maybe it’s a total cliché to choose The Beatles, but IDGaF.  This album has been one of my favourites for almost as long as I can remember.  I’m ignoring the fact that my “class song” when I graduated from high school was In My Life (because, ZOMG there was some terrible singing at graduation, no joke) and just thinking about how a few of my happy childhood memories stem from listening to this album with my Nan (who was a huge fan of both The Beatles and CCR) and the two of us singing Drive My Car whenever we were out together.

2.  Pixies – Surfer Rosa

One could argue that this is my favourite album by my favourite band, so it should be my favourite album of all-time, right?  Eh, possibly.  It’s up there, as should be evident by its place on this list.  My main concern about having this on here is that my FAVOURITE FAVOURITE versions of a lot of these songs are off of bootlegs from the 80s (oops), so I don’t know how long I’d go without wishing that I had some of those available to me.  I know I’d be saying “Oh, but I really just want to listen to that version of Break My Body from Boston in ’87!” before too much time had passed, but here’s the thing – my very favourite song of all time is on this album, so it has to be on the list.  I had considered not telling you what my favourite song is, but I know no one would guess.  This is my all-time favourite song, ever.  So, there you go.

3.  Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique

paul's boutique

OH, THE ARGUMENTS!  No, srsly, I’ve had so many FIGHTS about whether Paul’s Boutique is superior to Check Your Head (hint: it totally is) and friendships have been close to ENDING because CERTAIN PEOPLE refuse to recognize the genius of what is obviously the greatest hip hop record ever recorded.  No.  Shut up.  I’m totally for realsies here.  FFS, Sounds of Science is better than almost any song ever released, I don’t understand how people can still want to argue this point or fail to recognize the genius of this album.  Bonus, go listen to Shadrach (or, if you can find it – get a copy of An Exciting Evening at Home with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego…you’re lucky, I’m not taking EPs with me on my island adventure or I’d be taking that one too, just for Your Sister’s Def [DRE!]) and try to argue with me.  You still don’t believe me?  I hate you.

4.  Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs

69 love songs

Okay, I admit it.  I feel like kind of a snapebalrog including this one because TECHNICALLY it’s THREE albums and not just one.  BUT, you really have to have all three albums together, or the title doesn’t make any snaping sense.  No, seriously – if you only have ONE, it would be 23 love songs and that’s just stupid. This album breaks my heart into tiny pieces with Reno Dakota, then puts it back together with The Sun Goes Down and the World Goes Dancing.  I giggle to The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side, and sob my face off to All My Little Words.  This is an album that just gets better and more fraught with personal meaning every time I listen to it.

5.  Explosions in the Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

take care

This album is still fairly new, but I’ve already listened to it (repeatedly) more than a lot of the other stuff in my personal library, and it’s actually the album that inspired this post tonight.  I was listening to Postcard from 1952 on repeat, and said to myself “I will never ever get tired of this song.”  It’s true.  According to iTunes, I’ve listened to this song over 100 times since the album came out less than 2 years ago, and I’m still not anywhere close to being sick of it.  Don’t let my adoration for this one song cause you to think the entire album is less than stellar, though.  It’s all amazing.  Even more amazing?  This video, and seeing them perform the album live (even though I’ve never been to Belgium).  It’s gorgeous.  No, really.  Put this on and close your eyes, and spend an hour and twenty minutes being swept away by the music.  [happy sigh]

There are runners up, but these are my definitive list, as of the fifth of February, 2013.  What’s on yours?

Sidenote:  Thank you to everyone who commented on Sunday’s post.  Your kind words mean the world to me.  I was going to reply to each comment, but it was too difficult.  Thank you for understanding.  <3

  1. Springsteen – Born in the USA, U2 – Rattle and Hum, Tiesto – Parade of the Athletes, Led Zepplin – IV, and Crystal Method – Vegas. If I only had those five albums I would be content for the rest of my life.

  2. “Blue / You make me feel blue / Pantone 492…” or something. Oh, and ‘The Book of Love’, which is gorgeous, particularly the irony-free Peter Gabriel version.

Mine, in no particular order: Seventh Tree (Goldfrapp), Songs in the Key of Life (Stevie Wonder), Black Holes and Revelations (Muse), Hounds of Love (Kate Bush), and The Seldom Seen Kid (Elbow). Honourable mentions to Joni Mitchell’s Hejira, which would otherwise have made the list, but it’s a winter album, and thus not suitable for a desert island.

    • You know, there are many arguments on YouTube about whether the MagFields or Peter Gabriel version is superior. I love Merritt’s voice, though I realize he’s not for everyone, so I’m firmly in the “THE ORIGINAL IS BEST, ZOMG!” camp (which is also kind of funny because I totally adore covers as a general rule).

      • I don’t think one’s necessarily better than the other. The Gabriel version has a kind of nice sincerity to it; it’s decent walking up the aisle music. Merritt’s version’s sillier but beautifully performed, and perfectly in keeping with the tone of the album.

  3. Hmm…debating whether to say my favourite albums because I’m not very renowned for my musical taste…buuut, here goes anyway. In no particular order:
    + — Ed Sheeran
    Konk — The Kooks
Sigh No More — Mumford & Sons
‘Next to Normal’ Soundtrack — Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (does a soundtrack count?)
Aaaand toss up between From These Hands by Jake Nauta, or Life for Rent by Dido.

    Release the hate :P

    • Yes, soundtracks count. I…don’t hate Mumford and Sons? And Amy really likes them, so there’s that.

      • Haha! Well, if that’s the worst you’ve got to say, then I’m glad…oh, and I forgot to mention, I DO like the Beatles…just they’re not in my top five, at the moment anyway. My favourite Beatles song would have to be ‘Here Comes the Sun’.

  4. Yay for the Beatles and the Beastie Boys! Thinking about Magnetic Fields always makes me giggle because of “The Book of Love.” I don’t know why I find it so funny.

  5. I’m going to have to mull this one over, and might steal this for a blog idea at some point. With all the proper credit to you, of course. My problem is, I don’t listen to whole albums. This cannot surprise you. I listen to individual songs because I don’t find too many perfect albums. I have a few, though. *ponders*

  6. I’m going to embarrass myself by trying to answer this. Bach’s Brandenburg concertos. I’m a nerd. I <3 them. A lot. Vercua Salt's American Thighs. No, my taste in music hasn't really expanded since the '90s. Maybe the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction. (see explanation to the last album.) Something by Simon and Garfunkel. Poe's Haunted so I'm not completely stuck in the last century. (It was released in 2000….that's modern, right?) I feel like the guy from The Big Chill when they tell him "don't you have any music from this century? There's been a lot of terrific music in the past 10 years." Oh my god! I just made myself seem like an even bigger dinosaur who never gets out by quoting The Big Chill.

  7. I have to think about this one! Will write a post like you did :)

  8. Can we still be friends, even though I’m not a Beastie Boys fan? I love the Pixies, though. Your favorite song ever is really good.

My 5 albums? Man, I’m never good at this, because it all depends you know? But for this morning, let’s go with:
    1. Ani DiFranco – Living in Clip (Really, I could just pick 5 Ani albums and be done, but this is probably the one I listen to the most. Evolve is a close second.)
    2. R.E.M. – And I Feel Fine… The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982–1987 (I’ve had this one on repeat in the car for the last week. Old R.E.M. is the best.)
    3. Anais Mitchell – Hadestown (one of my favorite albums ever; besides being a great folk opera, the production is luscious)
    4. Frank Turner – Love Ire & Song (although England Take My Bones is a close second here)
    5. Kate Bush – The Dreaming (this one just popped into my head as I was wondering about #5, so there you go.

  9. It is always nice learning things about you. I sometimes wish I liked music written after the 70′s… but not too often. I will try to get washed up on an island with the members of Bad Company…

  10. My FIL was just discussing all the beatles’ albums, Rubber Soul in particular. none of us could remember what was on it – and then it was like – DRIVE MY CAR – yes! I would have to say something soothing and musical like pink floyd or early chicane (far from the maddening crowds/behind the sun) i can listen to those forever. they take me someplace else. good for being stuck on a desert island. i’m interested to try out your #5 – thanks!

  11. Hmm…it’s funny, because I don’t think in terms of albums anymore (not sure if I ever did, actually…) now that I can just download individual songs from Amazon. Which is great, because sometimes I only like one song by an artist. Like Evanescence’s “Good Enough” — everything else of theirs is a bit too…brooding? hard metal-ey? for my taste, but ever since I saw a Labyrinth fanvid that used “Good Enough,” it’s been one of my favorite songs. It just has this mysterious, hypnotic feel to it, or something.

But anyway. If I had to choose five songs for an indefinite desert island vacation of doom:

    1. Clannad’s “Dulaman (Seaweed).” I never get tired of this one…there’s something about it that always puts me in a good mood. It pulls me back to whatever time period the original folk song came from and suddenly I’m sitting by a fire, listening to people telling old familiar stories and singing traditional songs. I’m a bit sentimental, if you haven’t noticed ^_^;;

    2. The Transformation score from Beauty and the Beast. Because that one part, towards the end of said Transformation, always makes me cry. Every time.

    3. “The Legend of Ashitaka,” from Princess Mononoke. One of those movie themes that perfectly convey the mood of an epic story from some far-off time, with adventuring heroes and such.

    4. David Bowie’s “Suffragette City.” Maybe. It’s really just because I love to shout along with “Ooooooohhh WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAN!” It’s like the whole rest of the song is building up to that.

    5. This one’s a toss-up because dammit I only get one more song! Option A: Harry and the Potters, “The Forbidden Forest Hockey League.” Because it’s hilarious. Option B: if I wanted something more sentimental and personally symbolic, I’d choose something from the choir my mom was in when she was my age. It was called Nerija (yep, that’s where my name came from…also it’s a region of Lithuania, named after the river Neris, which backwards is siren, HENCE MY LOVE OF MERMAIDS is in my BLOOD! mwahaha!!). One of these days I’ll really have to convert the songs from the original album to a CD so I can transfer them to my mp3 player.

I really hope if I actually did get stuck on some island with only these five songs for company, that I wouldn’t get mind-numbingly sick of them after just a few months.
